Frequently Asked Questions — Credential Clothing & Wholesale Used Clothing
Everything you need to know before placing your first container order with AFCAN.
Credential clothing is original, unsorted second-hand garments collected in donation bags directly from charity donation bins and collection networks. The bags are sealed at the point of collection and remain untouched until they are opened by the buyer at their grading facility. No sorting, grading, or hand-picking occurs before the buyer receives the load. This untouched condition is what makes credential clothing the highest-yield product in the wholesale used clothing trade.
Credential clothing is fully untouched, original donation bags with a cream yield of 20–30% and a wearable yield of 50–60%. It is the right choice for graders maximising resale value. Mixed rags are institutional salvage that has passed through a retail sorting process — the best items have been taken for thrift store sale. Mixed rags have a lower cream yield (5–15%) but are significantly cheaper per pound, making them the right product for high-volume, price-sensitive markets.
Our standard minimum order is one 40-foot HC container, approximately 40,000–43,000 lbs depending on product and packaging choice (loose original bags vs. baled). For buyers who want to test the product before committing to a full container, we can arrange sample bales.
We regularly ship to Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Senegal, Pakistan, and more. If your destination is not listed, contact us to discuss feasibility.
Pricing depends on the collection season, volume, current market rates, and destination port. We do not publish fixed prices because the used clothing market fluctuates. Contact us with your port and volume requirement and we will respond with current FOB pricing within 24 hours.
We provide: commercial invoice, packing list with individual bale weights, bill of lading (ocean), loading photos before container seal, and a final weight confirmation sheet. CAFTA-DR certificates of origin are available for qualifying Latin American destinations (Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua under CAFTA-DR). Phytosanitary certificates are available where required by the destination country.
Yes. For serious buyers, we can arrange one or more sample bales before committing to a full container. The cost of the sample bale is credited against your first container order. This allows you to assess the quality, yield, and product mix before placing a larger order.
Our standard pricing is FOB from Canadian or US ports. The buyer is responsible for arranging ocean freight, marine insurance, and destination port costs. We can refer you to freight forwarders experienced in used clothing shipments if needed.
Loading preparation takes 7–21 days after order confirmation depending on current stock levels. Ocean transit is approximately 10–18 days to Latin America, 14–22 days to North Africa, 18–28 days to West Africa, 25–35 days to East Africa, and 25–40 days to Asia.
For new buyers, we require a deposit of 30–50% at order confirmation, with the balance due before the container is released to the freight forwarder. For established buyers with a track record of orders, we can discuss extended payment terms or letters of credit. Wire transfer (SWIFT) is our standard payment method.
Yes. Many buyers combine credential clothing with used shoes, accessories, or mixed rags in a single container. Mixed loads allow you to serve multiple customer segments with one shipment. Tell us your destination market and we will recommend the optimal product mix.

Typical yield from North American credential clothing: Cream/Premium (brand-name, near-new items) — 20–30%; Wearable (everyday clothing suitable for secondhand retail) — 50–60%; Wipers/Rags (industrial or recycling use) — 15–20%; Non-saleable (<5%). North American credential clothing consistently yields higher cream percentages than clothing from most other regions due to consumer spending patterns and donation habits in affluent North American neighbourhoods.
A 40-foot High Cube (HC) container is a standard ocean shipping container. For used clothing, a 40-foot HC container holds 25,000–30,000 lbs of loose credential clothing in original bags, or 40,000–50,000 lbs of baled clothing (more densely packed). Most of our orders are shipped in 40-foot HC containers, which is the most cost-effective size for this product.
For established buyers, yes. For new buyers, we typically begin with wire transfer terms before moving to letter of credit arrangements. Contact us to discuss what works best for your situation.
A big cap sack is a large woven polypropylene bag used to pack credential clothing for export. Each sack holds between 500 and 600 lbs of clothing — original, unprocessed donation bags sorted directly from charity collection networks. Big cap sacks protect the product during ocean shipping and are easy to handle at the destination grading facility.
A standard 40-foot High Cube (HQ) container holds approximately 70 to 85 big cap sacks, totalling 40,000 to 43,000 lbs of credential clothing. The exact count depends on the weight per sack. We provide a packing list with each shipment showing the individual weight of every sack loaded.
We currently pack all credential clothing in big cap sacks at 500–600 lbs per sack. This is the standard format preferred by grading facilities because the sacks can be weighed individually and the product remains intact during transit. We do not currently offer loose-load containers.
